Canva announced Canva Craft on October 22, 2026. It is the company's first image generation model developed and trained from scratch by Canva Research. The newsroom post says Craft plans composition before it renders pixels, and that the model is live for all Canva users worldwide plus developers on the public API.

Background
Most consumer image models generate pixels straight from a prompt. Canva says Craft first writes a plan for which elements appear, their spatial relationships, relative scale, visual hierarchy, and any text, then a second model renders that plan. The company argues this helps legible text, placement, and edits that change one part without rewriting the rest.
Training leaned on millions of human-made Canva templates rather than photo-heavy corpora. Outputs can feed Magic Layers so a generated image becomes editable design elements inside Canva.
TechCrunch notes researchers from Leonardo.ai, which Canva acquired in 2024, contributed, and that owning the model helps Canva control cost and quality after years of calling third-party generators. The Verge also reported the two-stage design, 2K / 30+ ratios, global Dream Lab access, and an overall fourth-place DesignArena ranking.
Reactions and Impact
Canva's own DesignArena numbers put Craft near the top of several design-oriented categories while fourth overall. The Verge repeated the overall fourth ranking and named OpenAI GPT-Image models ahead of it on that board. A Canva developer community post on October 22 confirmed the API model id craft_v1_2k and the same category rankings.
Hands-on reviews from independent outlets were still limited on launch day beyond the architecture and availability descriptions in TechCrunch, The Verge, and related coverage.
