Apple announced on October 26, 2026 a new iPad mini built around an 8.5-inch OLED Super Retina XDR display and the A20 Pro chip. The company positions the update as the mini's biggest ever: thinner at 5.4 mm, IP67 water and dust resistance, Wi-Fi 7 via Apple's N1 chip, and on-device AI features through Apple Intelligence and a Siri AI beta on iPadOS 27. Wi-Fi models start at $699 (U.S.); cellular at $849. Pre-orders begin Wednesday, October 28, in 36 countries and regions including the U.S., with availability Friday, November 6.

Background
A20 Pro brings Neural Accelerators in every GPU core and, on the 512GB configuration, a dual 16-core Neural Engine that Apple says can engage 32 cores for heavier on-device AI. Apple's press materials highlight local LLMs, creative-app on-device models, Siri AI with personal context and on-screen awareness, Private Cloud Compute, and Image Playground. That on-device AI stack is the main reason this hardware refresh belongs in an AI news feed alongside phones that already ship A20 Pro.
MacRumors, TechCrunch, and The Verge all covered the same-day announcement and match Apple on price, dates, OLED peak brightness, thickness, and IP67. MacRumors adds config splits Apple's marketing glosses over: lower storage tiers use a 5-core CPU and a single 16-core Neural Engine; only 512GB gets the 6-core CPU and dual Neural Engine; nano-texture is a paid option limited to 256/512GB. MacRumors also notes Apple's tech specs still omit ProMotion, so the panel appears to remain 60Hz.
What We Don't Know Yet
- Independent benchmarks for the "up to 4.5× AI" and related claims (Apple's own September 2026 testing only).
- How Siri AI beta quality and daily cloud-feature limits will feel on iPad mini versus iPhone Duo / Pro models that launched A20 Pro earlier.
- Exact EU timeline for Siri AI on iPadOS (Apple says it is working with the EU; no date given).
- Battery-life change under sustained on-device LLM workloads (Apple advertises the same battery-life headline as before, per MacRumors).
