Anthropic said on October 18, 2026 that it will commit 5% of its shares to a new Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, subject to stockholder approval. The fund's stake can grow as the company's valuation rises, and Anthropic says the money could go to large nonprofit donations, direct payments to specific groups, or efforts to deal with AI's effect on jobs. The announcement came as Anthropic prepares for an initial public offering that CNBC and Bloomberg report is planned for November.

How the Fund Fits With Earlier Pledges
Anthropic is a public benefit corporation. It says most of its mission work, such as safety and interpretability research, biomedical research and Claude discounts for nonprofits and scientific institutions, stays inside the company because it also has commercial value. The new fund is meant for spending that does not fit that model.
The company named labor market disruption as one example. It has already committed $200 million to studying and addressing AI's impact on workers and says "bolder approaches may be needed." Anthropic chose an LLC so the fund can switch between forms of giving, and it says it will share details on structure and governance in the coming months.
The 20% total combines three things: the new 5%, a pledge by Anthropic's co-founders at founding to donate 80% of their equity, and an equity donation match program for employees. Anthropic says about half of its employees take part in the match.
Background
The announcement comes ahead of Anthropic's planned IPO. Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter, reported earlier this month that the company could list as soon as the week of November 9. CNBC and the BBC report that Anthropic told prospective investors its revenue for the quarter ending in September was $16.8 billion. The BBC reports the listing could value the company at more than $1 trillion.
Reactions
Elon Musk said on X that he would "recommend giving the shares directly to the public," according to CNBC and the BBC. Lise Buyer, a partner at IPO advisory firm Class V Group, told CNBC the timing is needed to prepare for an IPO and is also "beneficial from an image perspective."
