Remotion is an open-source framework for making videos and motion graphics with React. You describe frames in components, preview them in Remotion Studio, and render locally or on your own infrastructure with the CLI and related packages. This article covers what it is, how to scaffold with npx create-video, Studio vs render, how that differs from timeline editors (only where Remotion's own docs say so), and the Free vs Company license lines published on remotion.dev. Checked November 5, 2026 (America/Los_Angeles).

What Remotion is

Remotion's pitch on remotion.dev is programmatic video: React components receive a frame number and paint a canvas. The fundamentals docs describe a video as images over time with width, height, fps, and durationInFrames, registered as <Composition> entries that appear in Studio.

The GitHub repository remotion-dev/remotion describes the same goal ("Make videos programmatically with React"). When checked for this article, the GitHub API reported 70,864 stars and 5,844 forks. Stars change; re-check the live repo page.

Homepage feature areas that are documented products (not third-party claims): Studio, parameterization, Player embed, server- and client-side rendering, captions, effects/transitions catalogs, and related tools such as remotion.new (try Studio without install) and remotion.dev/convert.

Create a project with npx create-video

Remotion's Getting Started docs show scaffolding from the command line, for example:

npx create-video@latest --yes --blank my-video
cd my-video
npm run dev

Other package managers are listed on the same page (pnpm create video, yarn create video, bun create video). After scaffolding, npm run dev starts Remotion Studio for templates that use that script.

System requirements called out in those docs include Node 16+ or Bun 1.0.3+, plus OS notes (macOS 15+; Linux glibc expectations). Remotion also documents ChatGPT desktop and coding-agent skill install paths on the same Getting Started page; use those only if you already trust that workflow.

Studio preview and CLI rendering

Studio is the interactive preview: scrub frames, edit parameters, and render from the UI. Remotion's site frames Studio as the place to preview, edit, and render.

Programmatic / batch rendering is a separate path: Remotion documents server-side and client-side rendering so you can generate many parameterized videos on infrastructure you control. That is the main contrast with opening a single timeline project by hand: the composition stays code, so props and data can drive variants.

Exact CLI flags change across versions. Prefer the current Rendering docs on remotion.dev for the commands that match the version you installed.

How Remotion differs from traditional editors (sourced)

What Remotion itself emphasizes:

  • Video is React code plus compositions, not only a proprietary project file.
  • You can parameterize templates and render many outputs.
  • Studio aims to feel closer to a regular editor while still saving back to code (homepage: interactive editing / keyframes that save to code).

What this article does not claim: a scored bake-off against Adobe Premiere, After Effects, CapCut, or AI avatar tools. Remotion's public marketing page checked here does not publish a HeyGen HyperFrames comparison table, so no feature matrix for that product is invented below.

If you need timeline-first editing with no React, a conventional NLE still fits. If you need code-owned, data-driven renders, Remotion's documented model matches that job.

Free license and company license

Remotion's homepage and LICENSE.md describe a two-tier model:

Free License eligibility (LICENSE.md):

  • individuals
  • for-profit organizations with up to 3 employees
  • non-profit / not-for-profit organizations
  • evaluation before commercial use

Allowed under Free (paraphrase of LICENSE.md): create videos/images commercially or non-commercially, and modify Remotion for your use case or to contribute fixes. Disallowed: copying or modifying Remotion to sell, rent, or re-license your own derivative of Remotion.

Company License is required if you are outside Free eligibility. Pricing on remotion.dev (checked Nov 5, 2026) shows Company options such as Remotion for Creators (example calculator on the page: seats × $25/mo) and Remotion for Automators (example: renders billed with a $100/mo minimum shown on the pricing widget). Enterprise is listed separately. Treat remotion.pro / the live pricing UI as authoritative; do not hard-code quotes from this article into a contract.

Team size, seat counts, and render pricing change. Re-read LICENSE.md and the pricing page before you ship a commercial product.

FAQ

Is Remotion free?

For eligible Free License users, yes, including commercial video creation under the LICENSE.md terms. Larger for-profit orgs need a Company License.

What command starts a new project?

The Getting Started docs lead with npx create-video@latest (with template flags such as --blank). Then npm run dev for Studio on the generated project.

Is Remotion the same as a hosted AI video SaaS?

No. Remotion is a developer framework you run and render yourself (or on infra you wire up). It is not marketed on remotion.dev as a prompt-only hosted avatar studio.

How many GitHub stars does it have?

70,864 via the GitHub API at check time for this article. The number moves; open the repository for the live count.

Where are the license details?

LICENSE.md in the repo, plus remotion.dev pricing / remotion.pro.
