Matrix-Game 4.0, which Skywork AI open-sourced on October 15, 2026, makes a bet that sounds almost old-fashioned: let a real game engine run the game, and use the video model only to make it look good.

That matters because pixel-only world models have no memory. Walk past a crate, turn around, and the crate may be gone. Code and demos are in SkyworkAI/Matrix-Game, scene weights in Skywork/Matrix-Game-4.0 on Hugging Face, and there is a project page.

Engine Harness

Skywork wraps the video model in what it calls a harness. The engine advances rule-based state from player input and draws a cheap low-poly proxy. When the rules don't cover something a player asks for, a coding agent writes new rules and prompts on the fly. The causal video model then reads the proxy, a dynamic caption and reference frames, and produces one latent per step (four RGB frames) with one or two denoising steps.

HUD and sound are separate, frame-aligned layers. Whatever the network paints, it can't change collision or gameplay.

Released Components

Scene Genre
Medieval Castle Third-person shooting
Ancient Egypt Third-person shooting
City Racing Driving

Each scene checkpoint is about 5.0B BF16 parameters, output is 480×864 RGB, and the full download runs to tens of gigabytes with SHA256-pinned manifests. Launch-day notes on GitHub cover RTX 5090 inference (FP8 linear layers, fused kernels, CUDA graphs, optional SageAttention), with 5080 and 5070 support promised for the following week. A quality preset (Wan VAE, two steps) and a realtime preset (TAEHV, one step) trade fidelity against cost.

Skywork's scene weights and game assets are Apache-2.0. The shared Wan/umT5 and TAEHV parts keep their upstream licenses.

The limits are spelled out on the model card. Each model is tied to its low-poly scenes and camera profiles; unfamiliar geometry, fast camera moves, occlusion and long sessions can bring appearance drift or geometry errors. No frame rate, consumer-GPU memory fit or exact reconstruction is promised.
