LightCraft is an open-source, non-destructive photo library and RAW developer: import camera files, develop with familiar sliders, export finished images. It is written in pure Rust, dual-licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0, and ships as a native app plus a browser build. The public product site is lightcraft.run; the source repo is storytold/lightcraft.

Queries for lightcraft usually mean this editor. If you wanted a free Lightroom alternative, that is the framing the project itself uses. Manual import, develop, and export need no account. Optional AI (slider help and retouch copies) uses Craft Apps credits or your own provider key. The project calls itself alpha.

What LightCraft is

Checked on October 30, 2026 (America/Los_Angeles) against the site, download page, README, and GitHub API:

  • Job: photo library + RAW / JPEG develop workflow (not a layered compositor; that role sits with PhotoCraft in the same Crafting Apps set).
  • Platforms: Windows, macOS, Linux, FreeBSD installers from GitHub Releases / getartcraft.com/apps/lightcraft; same codebase compiled to WebAssembly for the online editor.
  • Privacy line (official): manual editing stays on your device; AI sends the previews and settings your selected connection needs. No account required for free editing.
  • Repo metrics at check: about 15,098 GitHub stars and 5,790 forks; repository created 2026-09-30. Latest release tag v0.15.0 (published 2026-10-28 UTC). The download page still labeled 0.8.0 (October 14, 2026) at the same check—prefer GitHub Releases for the newest tagged builds.
  • Self-reported readiness (README Feature status): about 82% by feature count; nearer 61% as a day-to-day product, about 65% for casual use and 51% for a typical working photographer. These are project progress figures, not third-party lab scores.

Develop tools documented on the site and README include global Light / Color / Effects / Detail / Optics / Geometry panels, tone curve, 8-band Color Mixer, colour grading wheels, masking (brush, gradients, ranges, sky / subject / background), presets, library ratings and flags, and export to common formats. Desktop builds also expose MCP / CLI automation; the browser build is the no-install trial path.

Browser build or desktop app

The official free-Lightroom-alternative guide splits the two builds clearly. Summary of what that page states (guide dated October 14, 2026; confirm against the current release notes before a migration):

Topic Browser (lightcraft.run) Desktop app
Install None; WASM download on first visit Windows, macOS, Linux, FreeBSD packages
Photo storage Copies in browser storage (called experimental; keep originals and use library backups) Library folder; originals referenced or copied
Rendering CPU / workers GPU (Metal, Vulkan, DX12) with CPU fallback
Lightroom Classic .lrcat import No Yes (read-only on the catalog file)
XMP sidecars / preset files No Yes
AI agents over MCP No Yes
In-app AI panel (credits / own key) Yes No panel; use MCP with an agent

Practical split from the same guide: try a handful of your own RAWs in the browser first; use the desktop app for a large library, GPU rendering, catalog import, and XMP. Browser storage can be cleared by the browser—official FAQ says keep originals elsewhere and use File › Back Up Library…. Preferred desktop browser is a current Chrome with WebGL2; Safari / Firefox testing is still called in progress on the site.

Lightroom habits and darktable

Layout and shortcuts are designed to feel close to Lightroom (grid G, detail D, edit E, crop C, masking M, before/after Y, show original \, and others listed in the guide). One documented retraining point: Lightroom Classic’s Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+E export mapping differs—LightCraft uses Shift+E for Export, and Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+E opens Edit in PhotoCraft.

Desktop File › Import Lightroom Catalog… can open a Classic .lrcat without installing Lightroom. Ratings, flags, labels, keywords, collections, virtual copies, and mappable develop settings come across; Adobe camera profiles, AI masks, and some retouch settings are not reproduced, so colour often needs a pass. The browser build cannot import a catalog.

Against darktable, the project’s own comparison page (same October 14, 2026 snapshot) argues roughly: pick darktable when you need mature Lensfun corrections, compressed Olympus / OM System ORF, or a more battle-tested archive tool; pick LightCraft when Lightroom layout/shortcuts, .lrcat import, a no-install browser editor, or certain formats darktable does not decode (examples named there include Fujifilm lossy RAF and Apple ProRAW) matter more. LightCraft remains alpha in that comparison. Do not treat that table as an independent lab shootout.

Known gaps

From the README Feature status and the free-Lightroom-alternative guide (numbers and lists are official self-reports):

  • Camera colour: measured / built-in profiles cover a limited set of bodies; many cameras use a fit to the embedded JPEG preview, and failed fits start darker / flatter.
  • Lens profiles: no Adobe-scale lens database of its own; applies corrections stored in supported files (DNG, Panasonic, Leica, and some body-specific distortion data noted in docs).
  • Some RAW variants: compressed Olympus ORF, compressed Samsung SRW, Nikon HE NEF, and some Canon CR3 cases may open as embedded preview only—check your body before committing a catalog.
  • AI quality: Select Sky / Subject use classical heuristics; Object / Describe need optional SAM 3 weights; AI Denoise needs separately installed models; Super Resolution is listed as not started.
  • Modules: Map and Book views, video import/editing, and on-screen HDR display are called out as missing or incomplete; print layouts / PDF export exist on desktop with limits (direct OS print dialog and some overlays still incomplete per README).
