Google Flow is Google's AI filmmaking tool, made by Google Labs and available at flow.google. It launched at Google I/O on May 20, 2025 as a tool "custom-designed" for Google's Veo video model, with Gemini handling prompts and Imagen generating ingredients. A year later Google describes it as an AI creative studio covering video and image generation, editing and asset management, available in over 140 countries.
Flow replaced VideoFX, an earlier Google Labs experiment. Sources for this article are Google's own blog posts listed below; checked October 15, 2026.
What Flow Does
- Video generation with Veo. Text, images or "ingredients" (characters, objects, styles) become clips. Veo 3.1 Ingredients to Video added native vertical 9:16 output, and 1080p and 4K upscaling on Flow (January 13, 2026).
- Image generation and editing. In February 2026 Google moved Whisk and ImageFX into Flow and built in Nano Banana. Image generation in Flow is free, and a lasso tool lets you select an area and describe the change in plain language.
- Asset management. A searchable asset grid with filters and collections.
- Gemini Omni Flash editing. Announced May 19, 2026: conversational video editing with better character consistency, for Google AI subscribers globally. Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash (August 27, 2026) added start and end frames, 1080p or 4K export, and fast 360p drafts that use fewer credits.
- Flow Agent. A Gemini-based assistant that brainstorms, makes several variations at once, batch-edits assets and organizes them into collections. Available to all Flow users globally.
- Flow Tools. Describe a tool in natural language (an image editor, a video resizer, custom shaders) and Flow builds it; tools can be shared and remixed. Everyone can use existing tools; creating and remixing needs a Google AI subscription.
Access, Plans and Apps
At launch, Flow required Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra; Google said Pro included the key features and 100 generations per month, while Ultra had the highest limits. Today Google states that features vary by subscription tier, platform and region, and that Flow is 18+. Google does not publish a current per-plan generation table on these pages, so check the plan page in your country before paying.
The Flow mobile app is in beta on Android, with iOS listed as coming soon (May 2026). The web version keeps the full feature set. Google Flow Music, a sibling product built on the Lyria 3 Pro music model, has its own iOS app.
Google says Flow users had created over 1.5 billion images and videos by February 2026.
Where Veo Ranks on AI Rank
Flow is a Google product, not an API, so it has no usage ranking of its own. The Veo models behind it do. In AI Rank's OpenRouter video ranking for October 8–14, 2026 (by requests):
| Rank | Model |
|---|---|
| 1 | HeyGen Video 1 |
| 2 | Veo 3.1 Lite |
| 3 | Seedance 2.5 |
| 8 | Veo 3.1 Fast |
This measures API requests through OpenRouter, not quality and not Flow usage.
