ArtCraft (storytold/artcraft) calls itself "the IDE for artists". It's a desktop app where you compose in 2D, stage scenes in 3D, then send them to an image or video model. If you're new to it, start with our explainer, ArtCraft Software: AI Studio vs Crafting Apps. If you already know ArtCraft, the comparison below sets it against other open-source tools.
On AI Rank's October 16, 2026 snapshot, ArtCraft was the fastest-growing repository on the site, with 23,077 new GitHub stars in seven days (28,826 in total). That growth hasn't made it the default choice. The six projects below are older or larger, and each takes a different approach.
ArtCraft alternatives at a glance
| Project | GitHub stars | 7-day star change | License | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ArtCraft (baseline) | 28,826 | +23,077 | MIT or Apache-2.0 | 3D scene staging before generation, hosted models |
| ComfyUI | 137,643 | +1,052 | GPL-3.0 | Node-graph workflows, local image/video/3D/audio |
| Stable Diffusion web UI | 165,058 | −157 | AGPL-3.0 | Classic local Stable Diffusion with extensions |
| Fooocus | 53,419 | +90 | GPL-3.0 | Simple SDXL prompting, few settings |
| InvokeAI | 28,656 | +204 | Apache-2.0 | Canvas-first local studio for professionals |
| Krita AI Diffusion | 10,723 | +46 | GPL-3.0 | Generative fill inside the Krita painting app |
| SwarmUI | 4,667 | +29 | MIT | Friendly web UI on top of ComfyUI, image and video models |

How ArtCraft differs from the rest
According to ArtCraft's README, its tools focus on setting up a shot before you generate it. They include image-to-location, 2D and 3D image compositing, image-to-3D mesh, character posing, kitbashing for scene blocking, and character identity transfer. Generation goes through providers: ArtCraft's own model catalog, plus Grok Imagine, Midjourney, Sora and World Labs Marble. The README lists stable releases for Windows and macOS, and Linux users can build from source.
Most of the alternatives work the other way round. They run open models such as Stable Diffusion and Flux on your own GPU, and staging tools come second. Choose based on which of these two things you care about more.
ComfyUI: the most flexible alternative
ComfyUI's README describes a modular node graph for image, video, 3D, audio and text workflows. It runs on Windows, Linux and macOS, either through the desktop app, a portable install or Comfy's cloud. It runs fully offline by default, and optional paid API nodes connect to closed models.
ArtCraft vs ComfyUI: ComfyUI gives you control over every model and parameter but makes you wire the nodes yourself. ArtCraft hides that behind a canvas and a 3D stage. ComfyUI has roughly 4.8 times as many stars, while ArtCraft gained about 22 times as many stars over the past week.
InvokeAI: the closest canvas-based studio
Invoke's README describes a locally hosted web server and React UI. Its Unified Canvas supports inpainting, outpainting and brush tools, and the project calls its license commercially friendly (Apache-2.0). You install it with the Invoke Launcher.
ArtCraft vs InvokeAI: the two have nearly the same star totals (28,826 vs 28,656). InvokeAI is the better pick if you want to keep generation on your own hardware with a canvas workflow. ArtCraft adds 3D scene staging and hosted video models.
Krita AI Diffusion: if you already paint in Krita
Krita AI Diffusion adds generation to the Krita painting app, with selections for generative fill, expansion and object removal. The project describes itself as "local, open, free": you can bring your own models and run everything on your hardware, and cloud generation is optional.
Fooocus: the simplest option, now in maintenance
Fooocus focuses on getting good SDXL images from short prompts, with built-in inpaint and outpaint. Its README says the project is in "limited long-term support (LTS) with bug fixes only", so don't expect new features. On AI Rank it gained 90 stars in seven days.
SwarmUI: an easy front end for ComfyUI
SwarmUI is a modular web UI for image and video models. It can auto-install ComfyUI as its backend or use AUTOMATIC1111's web UI. It's useful if you want ComfyUI's model support without building graphs. It's also the smallest project here, with 4,667 stars.
Stable Diffusion web UI: the largest, but slowing down
AUTOMATIC1111's Stable Diffusion web UI has the most stars of any project on this list (165,058), and it has a large extension ecosystem. On AI Rank's snapshot it lost 157 stars over seven days. GitHub shows its last push on March 2, 2026, so check whether your models and extensions still work with it before you commit.
Which ArtCraft alternative should you pick?
| Your priority | Pick |
|---|---|
| Plan camera, pose and 3D layout before generating | Stay with ArtCraft |
| Maximum control, local and offline | ComfyUI |
| A local canvas studio with a permissive license | InvokeAI |
| Generative fill inside a painting app | Krita AI Diffusion |
| ComfyUI's models without building node graphs | SwarmUI |
| Quick SDXL images with few settings | Fooocus |
FAQ
What is the best free ArtCraft alternative? For local generation with the most model support, ComfyUI has the largest active community on this list (137,643 stars, +1,052 this week on AI Rank). For a canvas experience closer to ArtCraft, try InvokeAI.
Is ArtCraft open source? Yes. The storytold/artcraft repository is dual-licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0. Some generation runs through third-party providers with their own terms.
ArtCraft vs ComfyUI: which is easier? ArtCraft, if you think visually in scenes. ComfyUI asks you to build node graphs, though SwarmUI puts a simpler interface on top of it.
